On June 8, 2024, at the Silesian Opera, the premiere of one of the most esteemed operatic works in history, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s „Don Giovanni,” took place. This modern interpretation of the classic offers not only excellent music but also a fresh perspective on Lorenzo da Ponte’s libretto.
Director Michał Znaniecki chose a bold and contemporary approach to the story of the legendary seducer. In his vision, Don Giovanni struggles with deep traumas, which he tries to cope with by continuously winning hearts. Visualizations of inkblots from the Rorschach test appearing on stage introduce an element of psychological drama, showcasing the protagonist’s internal struggles. Don Giovanni, abandoned by his mother at the beginning of the performance, symbolizes a man lost in his emotions, desperately needing psychological care to avoid ending up in the infernal circle of his own feelings.
In the title role, we will see outstanding artists: Robert Gierlach, Stanislav Kuflyuk, and Kamil Zdebel. They will be accompanied by equally talented performers, including Bartosz Urbanowicz and Zbigniew Wunsch as Leporello, Aleksandra Orłowska and Anna Wiśniewska-Schoppa as Donna Elvira, as well as Kamila Dutkowska, Joanna Kędzior, and Ewa Tracz as Donna Anna.
The musical direction is by Tomasz Tokarczyk, who, along with the orchestra, will provide a magnificent sound setting for this performance. The set design by Luigi Scoglio and costumes designed by Małgorzata Słoniowska will immerse the audience in a unique atmosphere, combining tradition with modernity.
