In a stunning upset, Hubert Hurkacz managed to defeat the legendary Rafael Nadal in just 1 hour and 32 minutes on the clay court. Such a display of dominance against Nadal on his favorite surface has not been witnessed in quite some time. The Polish player secured a victory of 6-1, 6-3 in the second round of the ATP 1000 tournament in Rome. Initially, nothing hinted at such a swift victory, as the first three games lasted nearly 30 minutes. However, Hurkacz maintained his high level of play and efficiency, repeatedly frustrating the legendary Spaniard, who expressed his frustration through shouts, racket slams, and hitting the net post.
Hurkacz had never faced Rafael Nadal before, but that changed in Rome during the second round of the ATP 1000 tournament. Nadal had previously triumphed on the clay courts of Rome an impressive 10 times in his career, and despite currently being past his prime, he remains a formidable and demanding opponent, especially on clay surfaces. Interestingly, they met on Campo Centrale, with Hurkacz on the same side of the court as Iga Świątek’s idol, and on the other side, her fellow representative.
The second set was slightly more evenly matched, although the Polish player took control from the outset, breaking Nadal’s serve at 1-1. From that point until the score reached 5-3, both players held their serves. However, it was evident that Hurkacz had everything under control, as he encountered no issues in any of his service games. Furthermore, at 5-3, he broke Nadal once again, securing his spot in the tournament’s third round. With this victory, Hurkacz adds to his list of notable wins, which includes ending Roger Federer’s career at Wimbledon and now Rafael Nadal’s final appearance in Rome. Hopefully, Nadal will grace us with his presence in several more tournaments. Meanwhile, Hurkacz awaits his next challenge in the upcoming round against Tomas Martin Etcheverry.
At just 27 years old, Hubert Hurkacz’s triumph over Rafael Nadal, a former world number one and winner of 22 Grand Slam titles, was not due to a difference in age. Despite always fighting fiercely, Nadal notably lagged behind the Polish player in precision and speed, although he remained physically relentless. Hurkacz was Nadal’s first top-10 opponent since the ATP Finals in Turin in 2022. „Rafa is much more than a sportsperson, and I always wanted to play against him,” Hurkacz said of his opponent.
Fans were naturally rooting for the Spaniard, a tennis icon playing at the highest level for 22 years and a 10-time champion in Rome. At times, the packed Grand Stand resembled football matches, as spectators knew this was Nadal’s final appearance at Foro Italico. The year 2024 marks a farewell tour for Nadal.
The 37-year-old king of clay has been battling injuries for several years, causing anguish not only for him but also for his fans. Persistent back, foot, wrist, and knee injuries, leading to weeks-long breaks in play and training, along with various procedures and surgeries, have taken their toll. His current ranking of 305 is a consequence of the 2023 season, during which he played only four matches.
Today, Nadal must confront questions about his fear of injury and the accompanying pain. „I have to stop being afraid,” he said after his first match at Foro Italico, a three-setter against Belgium’s Zizou Bergs (ATP 108), in which he had to make a comeback. Perhaps his current greatness lies in his ability to accept that he is no longer the same Nadal as he was several years ago.
This year, he began the season at the Brisbane Open just before the Australian Open, but he immediately suffered an injury and did not compete in Melbourne. He only returned to play on clay courts. In April, he competed in Barcelona, where he triumphed twelve times and feels like the most important member of the tennis club. However, he truly began to resemble himself again in Madrid, where after good matches against Alex de Minaur and Pedro Cachin, he was defeated by Jirí Lehečka in the round of 16.
