The Equality March/Gay Pride in Poznań, held on June 29, 2024, was a historic and celebratory event. This marked the twentieth edition of the march, highlighting its significance and longevity in promoting equality and human rights in Poland.
Pride Village
In the heart of Poznań, at Wieniawski Park, an open Pride Village was established, becoming the epicenter of activities related to the Equality March. It was a place where everyone could find something for themselves—from a quiet zone to a family area. The site featured exhibition tents for NGOs, food trucks, a small stage with music, and various attractions for children. This all contributed to an atmosphere of inclusivity and community.
Historical Jubilee
This year’s Equality March was special for several reasons. For the first time, the event was co-organized and co-financed by the City of Poznań and Estrada Poznańska. Additionally, the Mayor of Poznań, Jacek Jaśkowiak, participated once again, underscoring the local authorities’ commitment to promoting equality and human rights.
Media Coverage
A significant step forward was the broadcast of the march by TVP3 Poznań. During the PiS government era, such a scenario seemed impossible. This indicates how much has changed in the perception and acceptance of the LGBT+ community in Poland over recent years.
Traffic Changes
The Equality March impacted traffic organization in Poznań. The route included Fredry, Dąbrowskiego, Szpitalna, Grochowska, Marcelińska, Bukowska, Zeylanda, Zwierzyniecka, Rondo Kaponiera, and Święty Marcin streets. Consequently, MPK Poznań introduced changes in tram and bus schedules to accommodate participants and ensure safety along the march route.
Accompanying Events
The Equality March was not only a parade through the city streets but also a series of accompanying events. In Wieniawski Park, a Pride Picnic took place from 11 AM to 10 PM, offering opportunities for meetings, conversations, and fun in a friendly atmosphere. An official afterparty was held at the Rose Courtyard and Lokum Stonewall, where participants could enjoy music and drag performances late into the night.
Dialogue on Faith and Exclusion
The Equality March also provided a time for reflection and dialogue on exclusion. On Saturday morning, an ecumenical service took place at the Chapel of the Reformed Catholic Church in Poland, and on Sunday, a discussion panel titled „LGBTQ + God” was held. These events addressed challenging topics such as the exclusion of believers due to their sexual orientation or gender identity within the Polish Church.
Record Attendance
The jubilee Equality March attracted a record number of participants. Organizers estimated that about 10,000 people attended the march. It was an impressive event full of colors, music, and joy. Along the march route, there were numerous platforms, including those of the city, the Stonewall Group, and the European Commission.
Message of Hope and Fight for Rights
The Equality March in Poznań was not only a celebration of equality but also a manifestation of hope and the fight for rights. The LGBT+ community’s demands included a quick and simple legal gender recognition procedure, reimbursement for transition-related procedures, effective protection against hate crimes, a ban on conversion therapy, and comprehensive sexual and anti-discrimination education in schools.
Summary
The Equality March in Poznań 2024 was an exceptional event that showcased how far Poland has come in the fight for human rights and equality. It was a time of joy, reflection, and community, which will surely remain in the memories of participants and organizers for a long time. This event emphasized that Poznań is an open, diverse city ready to continue fighting for the rights of all its residents.
