The Local Center Kamionek in Praga-Południe, built at the cost of 6 million PLN, has become a symbol of mismanagement and lack of planning. Despite the price of 50 PLN per square meter, the containers turned out to be too small, and the district did not approve their adaptation. There were also reports online that officials or designated individuals did not respond to inquiries about the possibility of renting them.
The problems with renting the containers began from the very start. Subsequent tenders for renting this space were unsuccessful, leading to heated discussions and meetings among council members, residents, and district authorities.
Some residents of Kamionek express their disappointment and frustration openly. Various comments reflecting the social mood appear on social media:
„Great, there will be an empty lot where the Roma can play music like at a DJ party:-) That’s what happened yesterday – lovely boombox, but only a few people felt like partying:-)”
„Someone from the municipality wanted free containers and arranged it in a roundabout way to make it look 'legal.’ In the meantime, the transport company got their share. Another proof that this place needs to build/rebuild tenement houses.”„I am very curious who will be held accountable for wasting money again?”
Ultimately, the Praga-Południe district admitted to the failure. At a meeting with residents, a plan was presented to resolve the crisis – the containers will be moved to Zegrze, where they will serve as facilities for Inter-School Sports Center No. 2. A breakfast market and mobile trade are planned for the space left by the containers.
The district spokesman, Andrzej Opala, explained that transferring the pavilions to Zegrze will not only support sports but also save money. The space after the pavilions will be returned to the residents for use, fulfilling the cultural, educational, and informational roles as expected by them for years.
Despite this, the atmosphere around the Local Center Kamionek remains tense, with residents and council members demanding answers and accountability from those responsible for this project.
