In a world full of surprises, it is not uncommon for figures known for their conservatism and seriousness to astonish us. Such was the case recently with Pope Francis, who, during a closed meeting with Italian bishops, used a remarkably harsh term to describe homosexuals in seminaries. The Italian portal Dagospia reports that the Pope used the word „frociaggine,” which can be loosely translated as „faggotry.” Quite a sophisticated choice of words, Your Holiness!
During the meeting with around 200 bishops from the Italian Episcopal Conference, Pope Francis not only called for greater selection of seminary candidates but also expressed his views in a manner that sparked a storm of controversy. „Gayness,” as he put it, suddenly became the main issue in church discussions. Vatican observers are incredulous at how far he has come from his previously widely commented remark: „Who am I to judge homosexuals?”
One might think that the Pope, known for his openness and inclusive approach, this time resorted to language more fitting of a staunch conservative. And here we have it, Pope Francis, in all his unblemished wisdom, deemed that the vulgar term „faggot” would be the best way to express his displeasure with the presence of homosexuals in seminaries.

And now, like an actor in a bad drama, apologies are emerging. In a statement given to journalists, the director of the Holy See Press Office, Matteo Bruni, assured that the Pope „never intended to offend or speak in a homophobic manner.” Of course, because who could have guessed that such words might be taken as offensive?
It seems that Pope Francis, the same one who once surprised the world with his openness and tolerance, has now chosen to surprise us with his… lack of knowledge of Italian? Because surely he could not have known the meaning of the word he used. Perhaps the Vatican should invest in a dictionary to prevent such „misunderstandings” from happening in the future.
And so, in an age where every step and word of the Pope is closely watched by the media and the faithful, Francis makes another blunder. Is it really possible that the head of the Catholic Church did not know the meaning of the word he used? Or is this just a clever strategy to stir up sensation and draw media attention?
Whatever the case may be, one thing is certain – Pope Francis has once again shown that he can surprise us. And although apologies have been made and the Vatican is trying to mitigate the situation, the question remains whether this was just a momentary lapse or a signal of deeper changes in the approach to homosexuality in the Church.
All of this makes us wonder what the future holds and what further surprises Pope Francis has in store for us. Perhaps next time, we will hear that he did not know the meaning of the word „tolerance”? I wait with bated breath.
